How Sleep Dentistry Works

Toronto Sleep Dentistry

Sleep dentistry is ideal for patients who feel nervous or fearful about undergoing dental procedures. We are dedicated to creating comfortable and seamless dental experiences with the help of our sedation and anesthesia offering. Here's how it works.

Sleep Dentistry Techniques & Levels

Relaxation with Sedation

Sedation dentistry involves tranquil, mild sedation, and is ideal for mildly anxious patients. Although you will remain awake and we will rely on freezing to eliminate tooth pain, you will nonetheless experience a pleasant, comfortable, stress-free dental appointment with sedation.

Twilight Techniques

These techniques produce a "barely aware - don't care" state, as well as profound comfort and an absence of pain. You will have little to no memory of your session. This type of sedation is a good choice for those who are comfortable with only a mild awareness of their procedures.

Complete Sleep

The term says it all. Complete sleep uses gentle anesthesia to eliminate consciousness altogether during the dental procedure. You simply sleep through it all, completely unaware. Many of our patients come to us specifically for complete sleep dental treatments.

How does the sleep dentistry process work?

Before the procedure takes place, you and your dentist will have a consultation to determine what type of sedation or anesthesia is most appropriate for your needs.

Whether you simply need help relaxing, or wish to be fully asleep during your procedure, your dentist will explain the process to you, give you instructions for preparation, and answer any questions you may have.

You will need to be escorted to and from your sedation or sleep dentistry appointment by a trusted friend or family member, as it often takes some time for the sedatives or anesthesia to wear off. This means you shouldn't drive, and you will need someone to keep an eye on you.

When you and your escort arrive for the appointment, you will be seated in the treatment room and made as comfortable as possible.

Depending on the type of sedation, you may or may not be unconscious during your procedure. We will carefully and continuously monitor your blood pressure, pulse and blood oxygen levels during the procedure; your safety is our first concern.

After Your Procedure

After the procedure, the sedatives will be reduced gradually. Once you are ready, your escort will bring you home. You will be given post-procedure instructions to follow. Please note that you will have to take the rest of the day off of work or school, so make any necessary arrangements well ahead of time.
